Dear VVMTA Community,
As we reflect on the incredible accomplishments of 2024 and look ahead to the future, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you, our volunteers, donors, partners, and trail lovers who have made this year a tremendous success. Your dedication and passion for our trails continue to inspire us and drive our mission forward: to connect our community to the outdoors through sustainable recreation.
At VVMTA, we believe that to Love Your Trails means to respect, protect, and actively contribute to their well-being. It’s about taking ownership by picking up trash, staying on designated paths, and educating others about responsible trail use. Whether you’re out for a hike, ride, or run, loving your trails ensures they remain beautiful, accessible, and enjoyable for all.
This past year has been nothing short of remarkable. Through our volunteer trail stewardship programs, we saw extraordinary community engagement. A total of 1,337 volunteers contributed 3,439 hours to maintain and enhance 140 miles of trail, repairing over 17,500 feet and closing nearly 2,200 feet of social trails, ensuring the longevity and sustainability of our beloved outdoor spaces. These efforts exemplify our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and creating spaces that everyone can enjoy safely and responsibly.
Our Trail Ambassador program continues to grow in impact, with over 4,395 educational engagements, 1,295 seasonal closure chats, and the distribution of 100+ WAG bags to help protect our environment. From fire education to responsible recreation, our ambassadors have worked tirelessly to educate trail users to “Respect the Vail Valley” and our trail systems.
A standout achievement of 2024 has been the continued expansion of our Soul Dirt program, which welcomed 450 participants across 40 events, providing opportunities for community members from all backgrounds to experience the joy and power of nature. With over 1,681 miles of trails explored hiking, biking, and even a backpacking trip, this initiative continues to foster inclusivity and accessibility within our outdoor spaces.
Our Trail Conservation Crew has been instrumental in preserving our trail network, contributing more than 7,500 hours of trail work, clearing 176 trees, and maintaining critical trail infrastructure. Their efforts have resulted in the removal of over 1,600 lbs of barbed wire fence, naturalizing 2 miles of unsustainable trails, and the construction and maintenance of 10.5 miles of new or rerouted trail.
In 2024, we also embarked on several ambitious projects, including opening the Eagle Bike Park, Apache trail extension, EagleVail trail extension, and Eagle trail improvements such as Abrams Ridge, Mike’s Night Out, and the World’s Greatest Trail Hub. These projects exemplify our unwavering commitment to expanding and improving our trail systems.
Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, our focus remains on growing our programs, enhancing inclusivity, and fostering partnerships that strengthen our mission. We are excited to introduce new initiatives, including a dedicated Youth Trail Crew, and continue our efforts to build a diverse, accessible trail system that benefits everyone.
None of this would be possible without your unwavering support. Whether you’ve volunteered, donated, or simply enjoyed our trails, you are an essential part of our community. Together, we are ensuring that our trails remain a cherished resource for generations to come.
Thank you for being part of the VVMTA family. Here’s to another year of stewardship, adventure, and connection.
With Gratitude,
Ernest Saeger
